Rave Culture and New Technology

Kevin Bang

Rave culture, as we see it in the mainstream public today, go hand and hand with new technology. In fact, there is some clear cut similarities and convergences between rave culture and the internet. In broad themes, both entities have a global dimension which blurs borders and barriers between people and at the same time fosters the conception of collectivity and community. By peeking into various rave discussion forums, we find that people's experiences at raves, as shared over these forums, is very similar whether in Seattle or in South Africa. Techno music itself is virtually devoid of lyrics, and thus presents itself as a form of music that is universally understood, shared, and appreciated throughout the world.

The dance rooms are filled with creative visual stimuli and the dj acts as a shaman, or religious God who hypnotically dictates the mood and bodily movements of his / her audience.

In this site, I discuss, in depth, the history of rave culture and how exactly the rave sub-culture spawned from new technology. Then I look at how the rave scene has progressed from the underground into the mainstream and how the rave phenomenon is an ever changing entity that continues to change as new ideas, new music, and new technology evolves...more...
